Summary
The Japan income percentile calculator tells you where your salary falls in Japan’s income distribution. If you are in the 75th percentile, you earn more than 75% of Japanese year-round employees. The calculator uses data from the National Tax Agency’s (国税庁) annual Private-Sector Salary Survey (民間給与実態統計調査) for 2024.
How it works
The NTA publishes salary distribution by ¥1,000,000 brackets with worker counts covering 51.37 million year-round employees. The calculator uses percentile points derived from this bracket data and finds where your salary sits using linear interpolation.
Key percentile points (NTA 2024, year-round employees)
| Percentile | Annual salary |
|---|---|
| 10th | ¥2,000,000 |
| 25th | ¥2,800,000 |
| 50th (median) | ¥3,960,000 |
| 75th | ¥5,600,000 |
| 90th | ¥8,000,000 |
| 95th | ¥10,000,000 |
| 99th | ¥20,000,000 |
Median vs average
The median (50th percentile, ¥3,960,000) is lower than the mean (¥4,780,000) because high earners pull the average upward. Your percentile ranking gives a more accurate picture of where you stand than comparing to the average.
Worked example
Salary: ¥6,000,000
- Look up the percentile table: ¥6,000,000 falls between the 75th percentile (¥5,600,000) and the 80th percentile (¥6,200,000)
- Interpolate: (6,000,000 - 5,600,000) / (6,200,000 - 5,600,000) = 0.667 of the way from P75 to P80
- Percentile = 75 + 0.667 × 5 = 78.3, rounded to 78
- Result: you earn more than about 78% of Japanese year-round employees
Inputs explained
- Annual salary (年収) — your total annual income including bonuses (税引き前)
- Age group (年齢層) — optional, to compare against your peers (20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65+)
Outputs explained
- Percentile ranking — your position from 1-100
- Top X% — the inverse framing (e.g., “Top 22%” = 78th percentile)
- Distribution bar — visual representation of where you sit
- vs median comparison — how much above or below the national median
- Age-specific percentile — your rank among your age group (when selected)
- Period breakdown — monthly (÷12), daily (÷365), hourly (÷1,920 based on 8h × 240 working days)
- Industry comparison — how industry average salaries compare to yours
Verification
| Input salary | Expected percentile | Actual | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| ¥3,960,000 | 50 | 50 | Exact median match |
| ¥6,000,000 | ~78 | 78 | Between P75 and P80 |
| ¥12,000,000 | ~96 | 96 | Between P95 and P99 |
Assumptions & limitations
- NTA data covers year-round employees in the private sector. Government employees, self-employed, and part-year workers are excluded.
- The data is for individual income, not household income.
- The survey typically has a 1-year lag — the 2024 survey covers salaries for tax year 2024 (令和6年).
- Regional variation is significant. ¥5,000,000 puts you at a different percentile in Tokyo vs rural prefectures. The calculator uses national data only.
- Age group percentiles use estimated P10/P70/P90 points derived from NTA bracket distributions and OECD shape ratios, as the NTA does not publish fine-grained age-specific percentiles.
- Hourly rate assumes 1,920 working hours per year (8 hours × 240 working days), the Japanese standard.
